I've seen a bunch of these videos. Never had issues with our tank because where I grew up in Australia the government would send sewage trucks to come drain everyone's tank. Just like garbage trucks. Don't remember the frequency but you'd see and smell them showup in the neighborhood every now and then.

Had a toilet line backup into a tub drain..Well, more like explode out of the tub drain..Nope, there were no cross hairs in the drain..Not good when you need a garden hose to wash the wall down..Tree roots were the eventual problem ..

what would cause the scum level to be about a foot low in a tank that is being actively used? This is in the primary chamber, which then flows to a secondary chamber with plastic media and air blown through it.

3-5 years seems way too long, unless it's a gigantic tank.

I just discovered your channel it popped up randomly on my feed but I sure am glad to be able to watch and learn as well as appreciate the knowledge. Were you able to find the transmitter afterwards? Or in a case like this would it count as a consumable if they are cheap in price to replace in case you can't find it?

All the septic tank videos have taught me that it’s fine to ignore the tank until it stops working and then you just have a simple job like this done and you don’t have ti think about it for another 10-20 years. No wasting money on maintenance.
